On Jan. 24, two members of The Iron Lady's make-up team—prosthetic designer Mark Coulier and make-up artist/hairstylist J. Roy Helland—were nominated for an Achievement in Makeup Oscar for their part in transforming Meryl Streep into former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. [Updated Aug. 7 to include memorial details.] Groundbreaking make-up artist Dick Smith—whose work on films including The Exorcist, Little Big Man, Taxi Driver and Amadeus earned him the nickname “the godfather of special make-up effects”—died of complications from a broken hip on July 30 in Los Angeles.
