Make-Up Artist magazine
Earlier this year, the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved a rule changing the make-up award title from Achievement in Makeup to Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling. This change will be in effect for the 85th Academy Awards; nominations will be announced Jan. 10, 2013, and the awards will be presented Feb. 24, 2013.
During the nominations process, all members of the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch who have seen the seven shortlisted films will receive ballots to list their top three choices. The list of seven films up for consideration for the Makeup and Hairstyling Award will be announced Dec. 15, 2012. On Jan. 5, the branch will host its annual bake-off, also known as the Nominating Meeting of the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. During this meeting, each team of potential nominees will introduce a 10-minute clip of its work, created in conjunction with the studio that released the film. A celebration of the nominated artistsí works will be presented on Feb. 23 during the annual Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Symposium. Details on that event will be posted in the coming months on makeupmag.com.
According to Branch Governor Leonard Engelman, a fifth category has also been added to the criteria for deciding the Makeup and Hairstyling Award: hairstyling for a film in its entirety. The other categories are make-up for a film in its entirety, make-up and hairstyling for a film in its entirety, make-up for a character or characters in a film and make-up and hairstyling for a character or characters in a film.
Each year the A.M.P.A.S. extends invitations to specific artists and executives to join the academy as voting members.
"These film professionals represent some of the most talented, most passionate contributors to our industry," said Academy President Tom Sherak in a written statement. "I'm glad to recognize that by calling each of them a fellow Academy member."
Out of the 176 people invited in 2012, four were make-up artists and one was a hairstylist. They are: Mark Coulier (The Iron Lady, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II), Linda Flowers (The Hunger Games, The Social Network), Toni G (Salt, Monster), Amanda Knight (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, Mission: Impossible) and Tami Lane (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe).
Lane will be a keynote speaker at IMATS Los Angeles 2013; visit imats.net/los/los_index.php for details. Return to makeupmag.com for complete details on the 2013 Oscar race.
