Local 706, the West Coast’s Make-up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, has announced that two-time Academy Award winner Dick Smith will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Guild Awards on Feb. 15. The revived awards will be held at Paramount Studios, 5555 Melrose in Hollywood, Calif. Oscar winner and Smith protégé Rick Baker will present the award; M.A.C. Cosmetics will sponsor a cocktail reception in conjunction with the event.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is “given to those artists whose body of work in the film industry consistently enhances make-up and hair styling artistry,” according to a statement from the union. Past recipients include Dan Striepeke (2004), Jack Pierce (2003), John Chambers (2002), Bob Schiffer (2001) and Monty Westmore (2000).

“Rarely have there been make-up artists with the legendary inventiveness, creativity and artistic excellence of Dick Smith,” said Make-up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild President Sue Cabral-Ebert. “Dick’s transparency and willingness to share the secrets of the craft have been the catalyst for young make-up artists all over the world to follow their imaginations and dreams. His encouragement and support have led so many to incredible make-up careers. It is with great honor and heartfelt thanks that Local 706 honors ‘one of its own,’ the legendary Dick Smith.”

Smith’s work on films including The Exorcist, Little Big Man, Taxi Driver, Amadeus and The Godfather earned him the nickname “the godfather of special make-up effects.” In 1985, Smith and Paul LeBlanc won the Oscar for Best Makeup for Amadeus, and in 2012, Smith received an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards.
