hydrangeas dotted the room where celebrity make-up artist Bobbi Brown
and her staff joined the magazine staff, Naimie’s owner Sam Bekerian
and professional make-up artists from New York and New Jersey at a
cocktail party and booksigning for Brown’s Makeup Manual. |

Academy Makes Change to Make-up Award - Monday 29 June, 2009 |
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a change
in the Academy Award® for Achievement in Makeup. The Board of Governors
has agreed to a change in the wording so that there may now be a
maximum of three nominees, and statuettes awarded, per film. The change
takes effect this year.
The change in academy rules is “tremendously important” for make-up
artists and hairstylists working in the film industry, said the academy's make-up branch governor, Leonard Engelman.

Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater on June 17 to honor a
man many described as their inspiration. “A Tribute to Dick Smith: The Godfather of Special Makeup Effects” paid loving tribute to Smith, whose long career has left a lasting imprint on the make-up world. |

Make-up artist and creature effects technician Steve Buscaino writes about working on the new Star Trek movie and what it took to put together a make-up lab to have on the Paramount lot during filming. Buscaino says the idea was to have a mobile lab that could travel with the production as needed, which he and his team had done for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. The Star Trek lab proved to be an efficient and cost-effective idea, on a much bigger scale.

Screen Actors Guild Finally Ratifies Contract - Thursday 11 June, 2009 |
After more than a year in limbo, the Screen Actors Guild has announced
that its members voted to approve new TV and theatrical contracts by a
vote of 78 to 22 percent.
According to SAG, the two-year agreement covers film and digital TV
programs, motion pictures and new media productions. The contracts
provide more than $105 million in wages, increased pension
contributions and other gains and establishes a template for SAG
coverage of new media formats. The pact became effective June 10 and
expires June 30, 2011. About 35 percent of the union’s 110,000 members
returned ballots. Votes in favor of the contract exceeded 70 percent in
the union’s three major divisions, including in Hollywood.
