2015 Local 706 Guild Awards: Rick Baker and Ron Perlman take a selfie

Multiple Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker has a new honor to add to his collection: a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Make-up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706). The Guild Awards, held Saturday, Feb. 14 at Paramount Studios, was a valentine of sorts to make-up artists and hairstylists working in motion pictures, TV, commercials and live theater.

“As you know, Rick has never been recognized for his work, so this will be a nice change,” joked presenter/director John Landis, who worked with Baker on projects including Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video and An American Werewolf in London.

In his acceptance speech, Baker acknowledged his parents and his artistic influences and mentors, ranging from Dick Smith to Bob Burns, who showed the young Baker how to apply a wound with mortician’s wax. “All my life, a make-up artist is all I ever wanted to be,” Baker said. “I dedicated my life to it and I guess this means I didn’t waste my time.”

Baker was one of two Lifetime Achievement recipients; Emmy- and BAFTA-winning hairstylist Kathryn Blondell, a branch governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, was the other; after receiving her award from academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs, she exhorted her colleagues to be proud of their work and continue to improve.

Actor Ron Perlman, who has worked with Guillermo del Toro on projects including the Hellboy films, presented del Toro with the Distinguished Artisan Award, the evening’s other special award category.

“Guillermo del Toro has presented me with some of the most annoying fucking make-ups of my life,” said Perlman. “Because of him, I’ve suffered boils, eczema … I’ve known the heartbreak of psoriasis.” Kidding aside, Perlman concluded, “I love this man. And let’s face it—so do you.”

Del Toro, the director of Pan’s Labyrinth and the co-author/director/producer of The Strain belongs to various guilds, he said, “but here, I am 706.” He described running his own make-up company, Necropia, in the early part of his career, and emphasized the importance of make-up in creating memorable characters. “When we think of storytelling, we think of faces,” he explained. Because he had worked with many people in the room, he said, “I receive this with a lot of emotion. I consider you family.”

Throughout the evening, celebrity presenters (including The Grand Budapest Hotel’s Tony Revolori) praised the work of make-up artists and hairstylists. “You’re the first step on the way to creating a character, and we salute you,” said actress Alfre Woodard. The Goldbergs star Wendi McLendon-Covey, who acted as the event’s emcee, got laughs with her gag about decoding what make-up artists and hairstylists say versus what they really mean: “If a make-up artist says, ‘Need a breath mint?’ what they mean is, ‘You need a breath mint.’”

At a post-show party in the studio courtyard, Local 706 president Sue Cabral-Ebert said more than 500 people attended the sold-out event, which had met her expectations “one hundred percent plus ten. We kept it loose,” she said. “We kept it fun.”
