MastersFX, an award-winning character effects company, has named Mark Ballou as its effects coordinator. Ballou will work closely with the company’s founder, Todd Masters, and its effects producer, Dan Rebert, to create and develop make-up and character effects for projects including HBO’s True Blood and the upcoming 20th Century Fox film The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Before joining MastersFX, Ballou worked as set coordinator and fabricator for KNB EFX Group on films including The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and its sequel, Prince Caspian. Ballou also worked for Christien Tinsley, creator of Tinsley Transfers, as coordinator for I Am Legend and as fabricator and technician on No Country for Old Men.
Ballou expects to keep busy as effects coordinator, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’m not real comfortable with idle time,” he said. For the upcoming HBO vampire series True Blood, Ballou and the MastersFX crew designed the non-traditional look and mechanics of the fangs for all of the leads and the background actors. Viewers can expect to see “vampires dying in interesting ways,” Ballou said.
