Journeyman make-up artist Brian McManus died of lung cancer on July 23, Local 706 is reporting. He was 63. He is survived by his brother Craig.
McManus was known in the industry for being able to fix anything, and is remembered fondly for his generous and kind nature.
Barry Koper, who worked with and lived with McManus for many years, remembered his friend: “He was a can-do kind of guy; if something needed to be fixed, he was the guy you called. He was really mellow, just a nice guy. Not a mean bone in his body. He was an asset to our industry.”
McManus began his career in live theater and made his mark in the industry while working at CBS. During his years there, he worked on The Carol Burnett Show, Three’s Company (as Suzanne Somers’ personal) and The Bold and the Beautiful. McManus was Burt Reynolds’ personal make-up artist for more than 20 years, and collaborated with the actor on productions such as Evening Shade, Boogie Nights, Striptease, Johnson County War and Citizen Ruth. He was also William Shatner’s personal on Star Trek: Generations and Star Trek Memories.
His most recent work includes Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Deadwood, Lincoln and A Walk in the Woods. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Makeup for a Series for his work on Deadwood.
