On May 5, Cinema Makeup School celebrated its 20th anniversary in Los Angeles. The school held an open house featuring a make-up demo by Oscar-winning make-up effects artist Joel Harlow, whose credits include Star Trek, Dark Shadows, The Rum Diary and the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Harlow did a silicone-prosthetics application on Ron Pipes; Harlow described it as “a character based on H.P. Lovecraft’s residents of this town called Innsmouth, which is a town in which the population has slowly been transforming into aquatic fish characters.”

Approximately 200 people attended the event. Guests were allowed to tour the facilities, speak with instructors and visit the school’s sculpture museum.

Cinema Makeup School’s Director Emeritus, Leonard Engelman, said he has seen several changes at the school over time but added that the curriculum still offered a structured, ground-up approach to make-up.

“I feel that learning make-up is a layering of learning,” Engelman said. “You learn A, and when you learn A, A fits into B, and when you learn B, B fits into C. Once you learn that, then you’re ready to go on into other areas of make-up and perfect and perfect and perfect.”

To encourage students to polish their skills, Engelman also created the Leonard Engelman Fellowship, an honors program in which top-scoring students receive personalized training with Engelman himself.

Looking ahead, Engelman believes the school will continue to grow. “When I first started here, they had a much smaller space,” he said. “Now even with this space that they moved into two years ago, they’re maxed out.”
