saved-for-webColin Lyons, co-founder of Fangs FX, died on Sunday, Feb. 7 following a recent illness, his daughter-in-law Jen Lyons told Make-Up Artist magazine. Lyons and his son Chris founded Fangs FX, a prosthetic teeth and facial effects shop in the UK, in 1984. Since then, they have created prosthetic dental effects for more than 400 films including the Harry Potter movies, The Iron Lady, Les Misérables, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Revenant and The Danish Girl. “He passed away … with his family by his side; he was a husband, father and grandfather of eight, soon to be nine! He will be very sadly missed,” Jen said.

Among the make-up artist community, Colin was a colleague and friend to Mark Coulier, Neill Gorton, Peter King, Nick Dudman, Jan Sewell and more. Gorton recalls, “I think I first met Colin in about 1992. Since then I’ve worked with him and Fangs FX on more projects than I can remember, producing literally hundreds of sets of dentures for us over the years! Colin was an old school gent, solidly reliable, always amiable and always ready to go the extra mile to do anything he could to help. With Colin and Fangs FX on your team, you always felt that that part of the job was going to be covered and delivered with zero fuss and bother or nasty surprises. Colin was utterly professional, delightful company and is a huge loss on both a personal and professional level. He delivered a lot of fangs over the years as well as tusks, rotten nubs and grotty gums but I’ll remember him best for all the smiles.”

Dudman and Lyons first met on the set of Return of the Jedi in 1981. “He made the teeth for Bib Fortuna, a character I was making. I have used Colin, and then Chris, his son, ever since. Their company—Fangs FX—has gone on to be the first stop for many, many make-up artists,” Dudman explains. “Colin was a real character, loud, opinionated, set in his ways and great fun to spend time with, possibly even hysterical. He was an inventor, which was why he and Stuart Freeborn got on so well. I counted him a friend, and my thoughts today are with Chris. RIP.”

Coulier worked with Lyons most recently on The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Iron Lady, both of which he won the Oscar for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling. “I have been working with Colin and Chris Lyons’ company Fangs FX for over 25 years now; it was with great sadness that I heard the news that Colin had passed away. Always the gentleman, funny, charming and above all an ultimate professional, he always had a story to tell. He will be sorely missed. His high standards, core professionalism and creativity live on with Chris and the entire team.”

The funeral will take place at 1:00 p.m. Friday March 4 at Greenacres Woodland Burial Park, Potkiln Lane, Jordans, Beaconsfield, Bucks, HP9 2XB. Refreshments will be served after the service.
