Every year during the Academy Awards season, we hear the question, “Why are only three films nominated for make-up and hairstyling?” Now, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has adjusted that view.

In a recent announcement regarding rule changes, the academy states: “In the Makeup and Hairstyling category, the number of nominated films is increasing from three to five, and the shortlist is increasing from seven to 10. In addition, the bake-off reels for the films shall not exceed seven minutes in total running time.” The bake-off reels previously had a 10-minute maximum.

Each year the academy’s individual branches and category committees review the rules. According to the press release, the Awards and Events Committee then reviews all proposed changes before presenting its recommendations to the Board of Governors for final approval.

Other categories with rule changes include Animated Feature, Short Film and Foreign Language Film—which changes its name to International Feature Film. The complete 92nd Academy Awards rules are available at oscars.org/rules.

The 92nd Oscars will be held on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT. The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
