On Saturday, Feb. 25, the lobby of the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif. was filled with creature and character art, special make-up effects prosthetics and set photography from the films nominated in the Makeup and Hairstyling category for this year’s Academy Awards. The event was the Makeup and Hairstyling Symposium, which featured discussions with the artists to give a glimpse into the process of transforming actors into their characters.

This year’s event was hosted by academy branch governors Kathryn L. Blondell, Lois Burwell and Leonard Engelman.

Nominees described their creative processes and presented film clips and displays of their work before participating in a question-and-answer period.
