On Saturday, Feb. 25, the lobby of the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif. was filled with creature and character art, special make-up effects prosthetics and set photography from the films nominated in the Makeup and Hairstyling category for this year’s Academy Awards. The event was the Makeup and Hairstyling Symposium, which featured discussions with the artists to give a glimpse into the process of transforming actors into their characters.
This year’s event was hosted by academy branch governors Kathryn L. Blondell, Lois Burwell and Leonard Engelman.
Love Larson and Eva von Bahr presented their work for A Man Called Ove; Richard Alonzo and Joel Harlow for Star Trek Beyond; and Christopher Nelson, Giorgio Gregorini and Alessandro Bertolazzi for Suicide Squad. Nominees described their creative processes and presented film clips and displays of their work before participating in a question-and-answer period.
Alonzo was asked about his professional experience and replied simply, “You’ve got to be a sponge. You’ve got to do it, and you’ve got to love it.”
