On Feb. 12, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the winners of the 2012 Orange British Academy Film Awards. Mark Coulier, J. Roy Helland and Marese Langan won the BAFTA in the Make Up and Hair category for their work on The Iron Lady.
“It was very exciting to hear The Iron Lady called out, but a bit nerve-wracking as well, but I’m honoured and absolutely delighted to win the award,” said Coulier via email.
During the broadcasted ceremony, Langan thanked director Phyllida Lloyd, producers Anita Overland and Damian Jones, the cast, the make-up and hair team and The Weinstein Company on behalf of herself, Coulier and Helland. Langan said via email that each of them gave a speech, but that the BAFTA website didn’t show the group’s award acceptance in its entirety. She also wanted to thank wigmakers Campbell Young and Peter Owen.
Coulier, the film’s prosthetics designer, and Helland, Meryl Streep’s make-up artist and hairstylist, also have received Oscar nominations this year for their work on the film; this was the first BAFTA nomination and win for each of them. In an email to Make-Up Artist, Coulier thanked Streep “for her stunning performance that really sells the make-up.” And, he added, “a special thank you to Phyllida, the director, who would bring us a vodka and tonic at the end of the day and personally thank us all; it’s not very often that your director does that.”
In 2004, Helland won an Emmy Award for his work on the HBO adaptation of Angels in America. When Make-Up Artist asked him how the BAFTA win prepares him for the upcoming Oscar ceremony, Helland said via email, “How can you prepare? You prepare for the work (film). You prepare for the bakeoff. Then I guess you prepare your tux, shirt and shoes and then just go.”
This was the first BAFTA nomination and win for Langan, the make-up and hair designer on The Iron Lady. Her credits include A Mighty Heart, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Dean Spanley and The Promise, among others. [Langan was unreachable for comment at press time.]
