Former competitors return to face new challengers—and challenges—in Face Off Season Five, which premieres Aug. 13 on Syfy.

The reality show about make-up effects artists has added a twist to its latest season by pitting eight artists from previous seasons against eight newcomers.

Past contestants include Alana Schiro, Tate Steinsiek, Eric Zapata, Frank Ippolito, Laura Tyler, Miranda Jory, RJ Haddy and Roy Wooley. The newcomers are Adolfo Barreto Rivera, Alaina Parkhurst, Edward Holecko, Lymari Millot, Sam Prince, Samantha Allen, Scott Ramp and Steve Tolin.

McKenzie Westmore will return as Face Off’s host, along with judges Ve Neill, Glenn Hetrick and Neville Page. Guest judges for Season Five include Oscar-winning make-up artists Bill Corso and Valli O’Reilly and sculptor Jordu Schell. McKenzie Westmore’s father, former Paramount make-up supervisor Michael Westmore, will reprise his role as a mentor to the contestants.

The show’s first challenge will be to create make-up for a costume ball attended by cast members of Syfy’s new show Heroes of Cosplay. As the season unfolds, competitors will also be tasked with creating a futuristic Frankenstein and his bride; characters inspired by Mother Goose; a Mother Earth goddess inspired by the contestants’ own moms; a modern version of a classic Halloween character; an original living-art character inspired by Cubism, Surrealism, Pop Art, Expressionism and Constructivism; a stylized alien for circus troupe Cirque Berzerk and more.

For the finale, the final three contestants will each create make-up for the two leads from the classic ballet Swan Lake: The make-ups will be put to the test in a performance by the Los Angeles Ballet. The winning artist will receive $100,000, a 2013 Fiat and a trip from show sponsor Kryolan Professional Make-Up to one of the company’s 85 international locations.
